The cinema of the National Archives of Georgia is hosting the Third International Festival of Archival Films from September 17 to 20.
This year's theme, chosen by 14 countries, is "Cinema – A Chronicle of History." Georgian audiences will be presented with films preserved in the archives of the USA, Czech Republic, Malta, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Croatia, Poland, Estonia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Peru, and Moldova.
The festival opened with Giorgi Shengelaia's film "Alaverdi." The audience viewed the film's original version, which was transferred to the National Archives a few months ago.
The event was inaugurated by Deputy Minister of Justice Buba Lomuaashvili and General Director of the National Archives Theona Iashvili. Information about the planned screenings was provided to the audience by Giorgi Kakabadze, Director of the Central Archive of Film, Photo, and Sound Documents of the National Archives, Charles Farrugia, Director of the National Archives of Malta, Heidi Holmstrom, a representative of the U.S. National Archives, Croatian director Ivan Salaj, and others.
The film festival will close on September 20 with the second film of the Georgian program, Nana Mchedlidze's "The First Swallow" (1975), presented by the National Film Center of Georgia. The screening is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of actor Dodo Abashidze's birth.
The National Archives of Georgia established the International Festival of Archival Films in 2022. Attendance is free, and films will be shown in their original language with English subtitles.
