Exhibition “Vakhtang VI” was opened at the National Archives of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia today.
Teona Iashvili, director of the National Archives denoted that the National Archives of Georgia holds as rich materials about Vakhtang VI as his work and activities were. Among the documents presented at the exhibition are the ones issued during the reign of the King, as well as his poetry, translations, laws, editions of the press established by him.
The ruler and the King of Kartli, poet, translator, bibliophile and public figure Vakhtang VI was born in 1675. He was the ruler of Kartli in 1703-1714 and the King during 1716-1724. His bookish and public work is worth mentioning in his activities. The laws written by Vakhtang VI are very important source for the history of law. His name is connected with the establishment of press in 1708-1709.
Before concluding book of law Vakhtang compiled code of old Georgian (Law of catholicon, Law of King Giorgi, Law of Aghbugha), and foreign (Jewish, Greek, Armenian) laws. To this he had added book of sedates (Educated Seculars and Clerics) including Vakhtang’s “Law”.
Rich documentary materials are preserved at the department of ancient documents of the Central Historical Archive that depicts all the spheres of the activities of Vakhtang VI covering the period from 1700 till 1732. Archive preserves 171 documents issued by him.
Interesting materials are preserved at the collection of Georgian manuscript books: 11 Law Books, rewritten in the 18th-19th centuries and others.
The scientific-informational library of the National Archives presents the first editions of Vakhtang’s press, the gospel printed in 1709 and Kondakion (liturgical book), decorated with miniatures, edited in 1710.
Exhibition “Vakhtang VI” will last at the National Archives of Georgia till the end of the year.
